Apple is developing a new version of its Vision Pro headset that is set to enter mass production in the second half of 2025, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo claims the most significant change in the new model will be the inclusion of Apple's M5 chip, a substantial upgrade from the M2 chip found in the current Vision Pro. The processor boost is expected to significantly improve device's computing power, with a particular emphasis on integrated Apple Intelligence features.

Despite the upgraded internals, Kuo reports that other hardware specifications and the overall design of the Vision Pro will remain largely unchanged. This approach could help Apple manage production costs, although the price point is expected to stay close to the current $3,499 starting price of the first-generation model.

Kuo emphasized that if this new version creates compelling use cases, it could push Apple's spatial computing platform closer to mainstream adoption. He also speculates on the potential integration of advanced AI models, such as text-to-video capabilities similar to OpenAI's Sora, which could dramatically enhance the Vision Pro experience.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to introduce Apple Intelligence features to the Vision Pro headset in the future. While the device is capable of running on-device AI functions such as writing tools, notification summaries, and an upgraded Siri, these features are not expected to arrive in 2024. Instead, Apple may be reserving the Apple Intelligence integration for visionOS 3, potentially launching in 2025.

That's a big "if", and whether or not that happens will have little to do with whatever CPU Apple uses.

Spot on. Mainstream adoption may only occur when the price drops significantly, the ski-goggle look is replaced by a more streamlined design, and the battery is integrated into the frame.

The AVP as it is is such a weird product - how can anyone be so out of touch with reality and expect this thing to go mainstream? (pun intended)

Of course. Maybe we'll get some new colours as well.

Man, Apple is so Cooked

I would be very interested in an article about the perspective from a developer and what the experience / feedback has been by the market thus far including the challenges they may be facing. Somehow I have not found anything in this regard as of right now. Is it profitable? Worth the development time? Enough downloads to justify the investments?

All this will make or break this device in the long run. Not enough users, no one develops for it (my assumption), not enough apps, no one is gonna buy it. Vicious cycle

Where do you take Apple expected this to go mainstream from? please provide sources, otherwise it’s just an invention of yours.

It’s been reported their production run for the first year was planned at around 300K units.

Apple knows perfectly well it’s a low volume product at this point, just like the Mac Pro or the AirPods Max. They have no problem coming up with and releasing expensive, niche products really.

If they keep iterating and eventually release a non-Pro AV for $999 it might be a clearer sign they are taking their headset mainstream.

I edited my post. YOu are not replying to the corrected version.

Someone walking around in an enclosed bubble wearing a VP is somehow a perfect visual metaphor for Apple right.

There are a lot of developer posts and comments on the VP reddit commnity.

I do find his comment puzzling. The general consensus before was that the Pro model would not be updated until 2026 and that the efforts were going to develop a less expensive model. Doesn't seem to make much sense unless they are doing both.

Regardless of potentially amazing specs and battery life in future models, I still don't see how something priced like a high-end Mac that, apart from mirroring a Mac you own, doesn't let you do a lot productive/professional work than you can do on an iPad or iPhone is going to appeal to the average Apple user or consumer electronics enthusiast at large?

Yes, the immersive experience and quality of the built-in display might be market-leading.

Even as a home theater or large TV, you don't get to show it off or share the viewing experience with others. So the whole "it's also an amazing and gigantic TV" is a truth with a big caveat.

A necessary upgrade would be a much lower price or it coming down to the size of a pair of big sunglasses that you can pop on and do Spatial Computing anywhere (not happening in the next 10 years).

Tim Cook, whatever you do, please change it drastically!

So they've released the first version and charged consumers £3500-£4000, barely released any content for it, and theres now rumours a second version is coming out with updated hardware already?? Sorry what? Talk about hanging their customers out to dry.
What do you suggest Apple do instead? Send out consent forms to all the early adopters and ask if they'd mind terribly giving Apple permission to release version 2? If you bought a v1 and are surprised a v2 is on the horizon I would question your intelligence.

The processing power never was the issue with this device, never mind with its ability to reach mainstream adoption. It's... everything else. The weight, the abysmal battery life, the form factor itself, etc. And probably most importantly: the price.
iPhone showed us that price is not a factor when you have a revolutionary product. The problem is, this isn’t revolutionary.

AirPods Max are wildly popular and have been from the beginning. Mac Pros, while always being inaccessible for most, have sold well enough to warrant many iterations over almost 20 years.

Also, while nothing similar is sold by other brands, AirPods Max are just a wireless version of overhead headphones. Mac Pro is just an Apple version of a high-end computer.

People were familiar with these product categories before Apple ventured into them. Familiar product category + Apple's brand recognition = big success.

But what is AVP?

It's not VR, Apple insists. It's "Spatial Computing"? Okay, great, sort of explains what it does.

But does anyone know what that is besides those who've bought an AVP? I don't think so and I'm not convinced it will ever catch on.

An upgraded model within 18 months of launch, even with all the physical issues of the current model, will signal to developers that they are sticking with this product line. Gurman had said the next Pro was coming end of 2026, which would have been very discouraging.
