Apple no longer plans to use resin-coated copper for logic boards in iPhone 17 models next year, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today.

Kuo said resin-coated copper failed to meet Apple's "high-quality requirements," leading to the company scrapping its plans to adopt the material for iPhone 17 models. It is unclear if Apple will revisit resin-coated copper for iPhone 18 models or later, but it appears that the material is at least a few years away from being used in iPhones.

Resin-coated copper is a thin layer of copper foil coated with a resin, such as an epoxy. The material would allow for a thinner logic board, which in turn would provide more internal space for other components and sensors in future iPhones.

It was also rumored that at least one new Apple Watch would use resin-coated copper this year, but it is unclear if that plan has been delayed too.

Easy to say that behind a screen and keyboard.

Setbacks are also not a new thing in general, at Apple or any company. Sometimes it requires going back to the drawing board. I for one appreciate delays, because it means they’re doing everything they can to make it right, rather than release a subpar product.

So we are blaming Apple for delaying unannounced features now?

If these *rumours* are true, they have determined that this technology doesn’t meet their quality requirements and stopped it well over a year before it was supposed to come out, I’d say that’s on time by a wide margin.
 
I prefer from this year Apple to adopt ipad pros thermal design for the iphones as well to keep the temp in check and less thermal throttling
 
Apple’s been using encapsulated resin for the Apple Watch SoC since its inception. I guess this move would hypothetically extend that technology to the entire circuit board?
 
Apple (and most manufacturers) probably sends a lot of stuff to the chopping board around the time they set in stone every product launch.

Those will show up latter or never at all.
 
And this is why Apple, nor any other sensible company, doesn't discuss the details of their R&D. There are always many iterations, wrong turns and failures before a successful idea emerges from the mass of thinking, testing and sometimes just plain old good luck that is part of the process of innovation. Some leaker suggests they might know something about a product or design feature that might or might not exist. It's interesting stuff. I love these little snippets. But let's not get too heated about how Apple is crap etc etc.

Butterfly keyboard - from my understanding could have used a few more redesigns before it when to the public.

Given that they did two revisions after it was released and that still didn't fix it, that thing should never have left the labs to begin with.

I hope they delay it to 18, save me another year of upgrading my 14 Pro. Unless the 7 still gets the thin update, then I'll get that. The thin iPhone renders look crazy good.
 
Oh surrrrreeee it didn’t meet their “high quality requirements“, more like it didn’t meet their “low cost requirements“ that they can on sell to their customer base at quadruple the price.

I’ll put my money on the profit margin on this resin coated copper wasn’t optimal, thats the main reason why these companies don’t go ahead with it. We‘re past the hyperbole of “high quality iPhones”, well at least most of us are…aren’t we?
 
IMHO, the best features are the ones you don't notice but falls under "it just works for me". Example - the hidden magnets that keep the MacBook closed and tested extensibly to ensure everyone can easily open with one finger. If you didn't know about these, the magnets are not located where you think they should be for other technical reasons.

Alternatively, the last 4-5 iterations of iPhone cameras that specifically had measurable advancements, did not create better photos for me because I am not a talented photographer.
 
I recently coated myself in a resin-coated copper and I found the results to be exemplary.
I tried this myself too… with the aim of increasing my IP rating

Tested it on the dog first and then optimized it

I’m now resistant to dust, can be submerged to 50 meters and have a rather high impact rating as tested by standing on a highway at night and surviving several impacts.
