Spotify today updated its mobile app to include Siri support, which means iPhone and iPad users running iOS 13 can now use Siri to control their favorite music streaming service, just like Apple Music subscribers.

After updating the app, users simply need to invoke Siri on their device and ask the voice assistant to play an album or song "with Spotify." Commands for playing playlists work the same way.

According to Spotify's release notes, Siri support is compatible over connected AirPods and also extends to CarPlay and HomePod via AirPlay. On iPhones and iPads running iOS 13, Spotify will also now turn on its Data Saver feature when a device has Low Data Mode enabled.

In addition, the streaming service says Spotify is "now available on Apple TV," although it isn't showing up in the tvOS App Store as of writing, so rollout is likely scheduled for later in the day.

Spotify on Apple TV....? Do my eyes deceive me? Is this actually happening after nearly five years of waiting? This can’t be real....someone.....please log me onto IRC and slap me with a wet trout as I’m clearly delusional....it’s 2019 and the concept of my faithful fourth generation Apple TV having a native Spotify App after all these years can’t be something that’s actually happening, this just feels wrong....it’s all an illusion, a sick joke at the expense of those who had yearned for such a wondrous movement to occur. Who needs or wants a native Spotify App when one can effortlessly and without interruption or connectivity issues cast songs wirelessly through the magic of their iPhone via AirPlay, which according to Spotify is the preferred and ideal way to experience Spotify via an Apple device on a big screen television. Needless to say, I won’t dare download this cursed app for fear of tainting my already incredible Apple TV Spotify experience.

I already show it on my Apple TV 4K. You have to go into the App Store>Purchased, and you should see it under “Not on This TV” or “All Apps”, assuming you’ve previously downloaded the iOS version.

Does not appear to use Spotify connect for login, uses a standard pairing code.

Uses the standard tvOS top-navigation and search UI

How about native support on the HomePod? I can always play Spotify on my HomePod by AirPlay.

That's what this is. With the addition of Siri StreamKit (is that how this one is called?) You can use Spotify on the Homepod by saying "Hey Siri, play the Beatles on Spotify".

Now I'm just angry at Apple that I cannot set a default Music App in order to skip the "on Spotify".

My HomePod yelled at me saying that it could not play on Spotify when I directly spoke to it. I could only say to my iPhone play X on Spotify on my HomePod then the HomePod would play it.

* snicker *

I read that really quick and thought it meant Apple TV on Car Play :D

"Siri, play Better Call Saul Season 4, Episode 1"

OMG, I can't believe ... * wrecks car *

Downloaded.
Too bad it uses its own UI, and it’s not integrated to Apple user interface. Looks a bit ugly in my opinion.

Can we then expect that shortcuts is going also to work with Spotify? Despite all features, tools and apps we got its still not possible to create a scene where I can i.e. lower my lights and start a playlist from Spotify.

Phenomenal would be to additionally choose on which speakers. But step by step...

edit: ups, just mentioned 2 minutes ago. Therefore I guess I can't expect it will already be shortcuts enabled.

Better than nothing. I still can’t believe Apple thought withholding Siri from Spotify would drive Apple Music sales. Anyway hopefully this means Siri can now be used with Apple Music on Sonos devices.

So is it working on HomePod or not? My understanding is that you still can only play Spotify over AirPlay from your iPhone/iPad/Mac on HomePod and not ask HomePod directly to play Spotify.
