I'm not a Google fan, but some of this is going too far. Yes, force Google to divest from the Ad business because they've got a monopoly and shown that they cannot be trusted to act fairly. However, an unfair monopoly on search? The dynamics of the search market calls that into question. The market is evolving away from traditional search and towards AI-based search, where Google is clearly not a monopoly.

The DOJ and similar agencies tend to only look at the present and recent past when it comes to antitrust rulings. If the search market dramatically changes, it is possible that Google at some point would be allowed to buy back any product or business they were forced to sell due to the court ruling (assuming it isn't overturned on appeal).

Microsoft were to be broken up into three different companies after Justice Jackson's thought to be landmark ruling. George W. Bush, signed an Executive Order charged them $250 million for their sins and they are still one company to this day.

Hell, I expect Trump to do the same an charge them $250k as a mockery to the Courts and as he sees it, "his Justice Department."
It’s important to mention what followed: Over a decade of Microsoft malaise. They had beaten the US Government. Microsoft thought they were untouchable. The result? Windows XP forever, Zune, Windows Phone, Windows Everywhere strategy, Windows 8, Office becoming more and more bloatware, the Ribbon, the list goes on and on. If the breakup had gone through it would have forced Microsoft to revamp their processes, become more nimble and efficient, force them to listen to their customers. OTOH the malaise allowed Apple to recover, and Google and others to grow.

How will the search portion of Google make any money without ad revenue?
This will be the end of the free search. Like others are already trying (e.g. Perplexity) you will need an account and get only a limited number of free searches. If you need more, you will have to pay. I suppose about 10$/month.

How did you come to that conclusion? I see it as failure if Google need to misuse their market position to be a success. Same with lots of Tech companies. Monopoly like condition is not market economy and always bad for consumers. How can you support that?
If they were smart enough to kill all competitors, they deserve to make as much money as possible. The world is cut throat. Survive or die.

I use google for nothing, intentionally at least. I use Ad blockers, Duck Duck Go, Apple Mail and calendars… it’s hard to pin down any specific thing they do that I see.

Soooooo yeah ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A lot of websites uses Google Analytics*. Soo...as long as you go online, it's neigh impossible to avoid Google's reach. It's harder than removing piss from a pool.

*I have no idea if website share their data with Google or not.

Meh. Make MS spin off Excel as a separate company. Excel is what props up Office and Windows. Without Excel, Office (especially Words) and Windows will have to compete on merit.🥹 Excel controls the world's financial system.

I want Excel for Linux.🤓

No where does it say they won't make money off ads. This is all about the backend ad exchange markets. Not the actual displaying of ads in search results.
Search results are provided as a complimentary service to the public. They have the autonomy to determine whether to display advertisements at the top of the search results and to select which advertisements to display and in what order.

Google made plenty of money with free search, back in the day
Good for them. They play it correctly and surpassed Yahoo! and Altavista. Bing is a poor competitor, but that's not Google's fault. Google took over Android and made it what it is now. They had to expand their business to survive.

BTW I don't like Google, I use DuckDuckGo. But I have to give them credit for what they did.

Google is also facing off with the Department of Justice over search, as the company was found to have an online search monopoly as well.
If it weren't Google, it'd be Bing or Yahoo, I imagine. The general populace tends over time to standardize heavily on a given product or platform; Chrome, FaceBook, Microsoft Word/Excel/Power Point, Google search, etc... Occasionally there's ongoing heated competition in a general sector (e.g.: iOS vs. Android), but many people seem to like going with the clear ongoing market 'winner.'

Despite proponents of 'competition' having this seeming dream of a balkanized industry of multiple roughly equal players in a given segment intensely competing decade after decade, that doesn't seem to be the end product of market forces.

FaceBook, but MySpace forgotten.
America Online? Not anymore.
Google...who Yahoos?
Word...how many people know of WordPerfect now, or remember WordStar?
Excel...who remembers Lotus 1-2-3?
MS Office - despite open source free alternatives.
Chrome...because a browser web pages just work with means something!

Good point. Standardization is just convenient. All using Word is like all using USB-C. Microsoft was tough under Gates and wiped out all other Offices because of the link to Windows. There are talks here and there saying that Microsoft products are too expensive and it is time to move on.
