I have such conflicting feelings about the Magic Keyboard. Yes, it's GREAT to type on. Yes, it's awesome how the iPad just hovers over the keyboard.

But... you cannot use the iPad in portrait mode when the keyboard is attached, which means you need to remove it whenever you want to use a portrait mode only app or an app that is better in portrait (e.g. books and documents).

Also, I cannot count the number of times I have intuitively looked for physical volume and brightness keys. How are they not on there? It's frustrating every time to have to swipe for the brightness controls.

Finally, the Magic Keyboard is expensive and thick and heavy. My M2 MBA is way more compact than the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard.

Hopefully Apple address these shortcomings in the future. As it stands, this is a half-baked product.

I look forward to the new design. I used an iPad with the MK for over 5 years and found it to be a good combo. The good thing is my M2Pro stil works with it. I shudder to think what it wil cost me to get the nee combo.

Will be interesting to see what they bring to the table. It sounds underwhelming so far.

But it is likely to be in the spring to allow iPadOS 18 to be the marketing tie in. We shall see if it is decent though.

I don’t anticipate replacing my M1 anytime soon.

One of Apple's biggest mistakes was adding a cursor to the iPad. iPad is a touch first device, so it should be a touch first device. Magic keyboard with trackpad makes no sense and it's a classic case of listening to the customer who is wrong. Imagine when the iPhone was first released and everyone complained about a lack of keyboard so Apple shrinks the screen and adds a keyboard to the iPhone.

Apple should just ditch the magic keyboard and trackpad IMO. Let iPad be iPad and let Mac be Mac.

What makes even less sense is a touchscreen Mac. Hope Apple never makes one. Such an incredibly stupid idea.
This is the worst iPad take I’ve ever read.

Was hoping Mark would mention the 14" model. I love my 12.9" but after using the Tab S8 Ultra's 14.6" display, the extra screen real estate is wonderful.
I’d like a larger iPad, but I don’t like the Tab S aspect ratio. The S8 Ultra is mostly just wider than the 12.9” iPad:

Apple's next-generation iPad Pro will launch alongside a redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory that makes the device more laptop-like
At this point, just modify the boot settings so you can dual-boot between macOS and iPadOS....god damn...if you are going to make it laptop-like, just go ahead and go the distance and enable the desktop OS that is designed for laptops, for the iPad....these half-steps are just so infuriating!!! Ahhhh!!!

In what way does it detract from the iPad? It’s optional and the iPad is still completely designed with touch in mind
1. Waste of hardware and software engineering resources that could have went to making touch better
2. iPad had universal control turned on by default. So when I expected my mouse to move off screen from my MacBook to my Mac mini, it went on to my iPad. When I moved back to my MacBook, my mouse didn't work on either devices. I had to reboot my Mac to get my mouse back. Complete distraction. Easy to turn off for me but I imagine my parents wouldn't know how to turn this off.

In a perfect world iPad would support dual mode. The standard iPadOS „tablet mode“ and once you attach a keyboard, it „transforms“ into full on macOS. Considering how ridiculous overpriced their keyboards are in the first place, this would get even more people to buy one, which means more 🤑🤑🤑🤑 for Apple
Exactly my point!

For those that believe the addition of trackpad support was a tragic mistake, thankfully Apple still sells the regular Smart Keyboard Folio for iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad 9th Gen (remarkably, this product isn't available for iPad 10th generation!)

In terms of trackpad support, try using an iPad with a full size, bluetooth trackpad and keyboard once in a while. It is actually a cool experience how you can turn an iPad into a serious writing machine, then pick it up and it is a tablet again.

The challenge Apple has with the Magic Keyboard is the weight and thickness. Because you need a base that supports the iPad's weight, it becomes a bit heavy. Hard engineering problem.

Why are you acting like someone's forcing you to use mouse or trackpad with your iPad 😭

Man, I strongly believe that all of these issues related to trackpads, mouse-support, multi-window support, multi-tasking, etc, all go away if you allow the iPad to dual boot between iPadOS and macOS.

You can even differentiate the iPad product line based on the ability to dual boot between iPadOS and macOS:
- iPad Pros: allows for dual boot between macOS and iPadOS. For pros, or prosumers, wanting to do more with their iPads and for the "power users"
- iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Mini: no dual boot option, just plain 'ol iPadOS, that's it. For consumers that just want to do the basics with the iPad.

This way, you won't have the confusion where some iPads have the M-series chips, and some have the A-series chips. If the iPad has a M-series chip, it is an iPad Pro, and allows you to dual boot between macoS and iPadOS. If the iPad has an A-series chip, it is an iPad, iPad Air, or an iPad mini, and has iPadOS on it.

I totally agree. I'd buy a magic keyboard for my iPad Pro if it ran like a Mac when the keyboard is in use. It would be more like a Microsoft Surface and that's a good thing...

And fwiw, I did *not* buy a magic keyboard for my iPad Pro. It's WAY TOO expensive for just a keyboard.

You're wrong. Waste of Apple's engineering resources and waste of customer's resources. A customer might think their favorite apps work fine with the cursor. So they invest $ into the magic keyboard only to find that it doesn't work well because developers didn't bother to support it because it was optional.

Yes talk EXACTLY about customer being wrong.
Blame the app devs for not going all the way, I’m not surprised either. But in apps that do support the trackpad and keyboard, they work exactly how I’d expect a Macbook to.

Cursor is terrible. It magnetically attaches to a button I don't want it to magnetically attach to. So I swipe harder to detach but then it goes past the button I want to tap.
The actual cursor doesn’t really snap, that’s just visual.
