iPhone 14 Pro Display Panels Reveal New Pill-and-Hole Design Replacing Notch

Apple's upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models are widely rumored to feature new displays with a pill-shaped cutout and a hole for the Face ID sensors and front camera, respectively, and now a real-world look at this design has seemingly surfaced.

Front glass panels for all four iPhone 14 models have allegedly surfaced on Chinese social media website Weibo, as shared on Twitter by @SaranByte and reported by 9to5Mac. The panels reveal not only the rumored pill-and-hole design for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but also slightly thinner bezels and a taller aspect ratio for those models.

As expected, the image also shows that the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max models will retain the same notch as iPhone 13 models.

While it is unclear if the image is legitimate, the front glass panels line up with all rumors that we have heard about iPhone 14 models so far, and similar leaks have occurred in the past. Last year, for example, MacRumors exclusively shared an image of front glass panels for all iPhone 13 models that proved to be accurate.

The pill-and-hole design for iPhone 14 Pro models has been reported by sources including display industry consultant Ross Young and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Maybe this is a stupid observation, but the pill, while taking up perhaps less screen real estate, seems to still be as equally "in the way"?

Hate to say it, but I like the notch better. Of course everyone (myself included) hated the notch when it was introduced, but I’m used to it.

I’ll probably adapt to the pill and hole layout though.

Ross Young, which has a close to 100% track record is sure the design is a pill + punch hole... I'd love for him to be wrong and it turns out it's one prolonged pill, but doesn't look like it

Seems a little strange to me that there's inconsistent design 'quirks' across the range.

And I'm really hoping the Mini becomes the form factor for a future SE. I know there's recent sales guesstimates out there, but here in UK now people can 'try before we buy' in store, I see so very many of them around London (both male, female, young, old, representing full range of userbase and hand/pocket sizes!)

Ah well, here's hoping, else I'll be picking up a refurb 13 mini in a couple of years if/when my XS bites the dust.

Looks horrible…. Notch is cleaner, now display has 2 holes in it, and the space above the pill and hole is useless. So they basically enlarged the useless area of the notch further down the screen🤦‍♂️

I honestly don’t mind the Pill-Hole. It's a new/welcome change from the Notch. I also have a feeling the Pill-Hole won't be too thick and visible thus giving us more space on an iPhone.

With this Pill-Hole shape factor, I really hope Apple will bring back the battery percentage now. No excuse!

The pill is… fine, I guess. One would think it’s “Harder” to make a display with a hole in it, versus a notch, so it’s probably costing us some money but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ gotta have something new to talk about, I guess this is it.

So it seems there is more space between the pill and edges. Here's hoping the battery percentage indicator comes back.

Mind you I won't be buying this year anyway, for myself that is. My wife doesn't really care as much about the battery indicator. The non-pro Max will be a great update for her XR.

Yes and no. The notched iPhones have more bezel.

It doesn’t seem to give back more screen real estate than the notch. The difference is negligible. It’s probably a way to further differentiate the Pro models from the regular ones.

it was better with the notch with these smaller bezels..because now the pixels from the pill to the top bezel will be useless , they cant even place icons there for DND , alarm and so on unfortunately

Pill and hole sucks *** big time! Hate it! Notch lover all the way, never bothered me in the first instance and doesn't to this day. Don't mind it on my MBP either...

According to Macrumors, they don’t even notice the notch so they shouldn’t notice the pill either.

This adds nothing to the design and is only meant to differentiate the models more noticeably. I think the notch looks better - its uniform in design.
