Because developers will still have to build their apps around the same size area as the notch. If they just combined the pill shape and hole punch cutout, they could've moved them closer together, and shrunk the notch. But they decided to do this. How does it not give more screen real estate? Maybe it's not where you'd like the screen real estate but it's definitely more overall screen.
There appears to be quite a bit more space horizontally with the pill, partially because of the decreased bezel size. Also, there appears to be a bit more space vertically, again because of the decreased bezel size, but with the bottom of the pill at a similar location as the bottom of the notch, along with the pill being shorter than the notch, resulting in empty space above the pill.I have a feeling they won’t bring back the battery percentage because there’s not much more space horizontally. And I’m a bit worried that the pill seems to go deeper in terms of vertical space than the current notch, which reminds me of the Pixel 3.
I hope I’m wrong though!
The space above and around the notch will likely be usable for video. It will not be part of the application safe space though. Not sure how the pill shape is better. The portion of display above the pill does not look usable.

Horizontal space is difficult to tell, but vertical space is definitely more. Take a look at this:There appears to be quite a bit more space horizontally with the pill, partially because of the decreased bezel size. Also, there appears to be a bit more space vertically, again because of the decreased bezel size, but with the bottom of the pill at a similar location as the bottom of the notch, along with the pill being shorter than the notch, resulting in empty space above the pill.
The change in bezel size also accounts for the difference in aspect ratio.
The space above and around the notch will likely be usable for video. It will not be part of the application safe space though.
In other words, for all intents and purposes, it will likely be treated similarly to the notch for applications.
But if the screen real estate isn't usable, it's pointless. This creates more work for developers it doesn't negate the fact that the pill design = more screen real estate. More screen real estate is more screen real estate. Plain and simple.
Yeah. People who weren't bothered by the notch wont be bothered by this.I predict when this is released the notch lovers will change course in their preference...
It's just so unnecessary. Developers are going to have to built their apps to wrap content around the same size area as the notch, this doesn't really fix anything. Maybe you'll get 10 more viewable pixels for videos.
Its hard to tell for sure, but it actually looks like it drops lower than the notch, taking up more usable screen real estate, unless Apple has the area above the pill planned for something useful.Maybe this is a stupid observation, but the pill, while taking up perhaps less screen real estate, seems to still be as equally "in the way"?
Three things.Horizontal space is difficult to tell, but vertical space is definitely more. Take a look at this:
Like the back of the phone? I hope you're correct. No way iPhone will be asymmetric :/
I understand that the bezels are smaller, however, the point that I’m trying to make is that the bottom of the pill dives deeper into the screen, regardless of it having space in-between the bezel and the bezels being smaller. This means that, in a way, it will get in the way a bit more than the current notch. And this is clearly visible from the bad mock-up I made.Three things.
1. We don't even know if those pictures are real. However, if they are:
2. In that image, the pill screen is a mm or two lower than the notched screen. They're not aligned at the same height.
3. You didn't take account what I said about the bezels and pill height. The bezels of the Pros are smaller, so there is more vertical height to begin with. The pill is also shorter than the notch. Thus, if the bottom of the pill were the same level as the bottom of the notch, there would be unused space above the pill because the pill is shorter and the bezel above it is also shorter.
Not sure how the pill shape is better. The portion of display above the pill does not look usable.
Again, the screens in that picture aren't aligned. The pill screen is actually placed on the table lower than the notched screen.I understand that the bezels are smaller, however, the point that I’m trying to make is that the bottom of the pill dives deeper into the screen, regardless of it having space in-between the bezel and the bezels being smaller. This means that, in a way, it will get in the way a bit more than the current notch. And this is clearly visible from the bad mock-up I made.
