I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup to a NAS and then the NAS automatically uploads to Mega.

Time Machine sadly doesn't play nice with my NAS.
If you don't mind me asking: did you setup CCC to backup to a NAS share or to a disk image that's on a NAS share, and does it work reliably and at least somewhat usefully fast?

Looking to completely remake my backup strategy, since I've just been hit by a double backup hiccup:
  • TimeMachine seems to somehow have damaged one backup set on the SSD. Backups sometimes run, but usually the disk crashes and ejects every few minutes and is non-fixable with Disk Tools as long as the TimeMachine partition is mounted
  • Arq seems to have forgotten every backup except the very latest one, so adios file history in the cloud
  • tried using ChronoSync to backup my user folder to a disk image on the Synology (connected locally by ethernet). Backup finished after ~48h, but the backed-up files are more or less unreachable, as Finder just stalls if I even try to open a ~/Library/ folder on the backup.

Please compare/contrast cloud backups. Especially Backblaze and Carbonite. I’ve been using Carbonite for one of my backups (Time Machine also) but I’m curious about other’s experience. This my first Mac silicon machine, previously I had an Intel 27” iMac. I’d appreciate the community’s thoughts.

I have a couple of local backups — a main one for Time Machine, plus another external drive for videos.

I also want an online backup in case I lose the physical ones in my house (theft, fire etc). Ideally, this backup would be able to backup my external drive too, although I could manually sync the files if needed.

What’s the best route here? I’m happy to spend a bit, but don’t want an expensive subscription. I have Dropbox and iCloud, but assume there are better options purpose built for this.

Backblaze, hands down.

Regular Backblaze (personal tier) user here. I have a Mac mini permanently backing up all files to Backblaze from an attached 16TB drive. That drive gets backed up locally as well. Backblaze seems to run fine with no intervention from me. I do check the backup in the cloud occasionally to see if I can restore certain files at random. I have had no issues thus far. Oh, one caveat: remember to move the Backblaze temporary folder onto the large backup drive i.e. do NOT leave it on your computer main drive: that folder can eat a lot of space. There is an option in settings to move the folder.
