Oh, that’s why they called it the “iPhone X”.

I mean who needs an iPhone 10 now, much less a decade from now.

That Eddie guy sure is thinking!!

AI technology is advancing so rapidly that the iPhone could be outdated in the next decade, Apple services chief Eddy Cue said today when testifying in the Google vs. DoJ antitrust case (via Bloomberg).

"You may not need an iPhone 10 years from now, as crazy as it sounds," Cue said. He was referring to the way that AI is likely to evolve in the coming years, and how wearables combined with intuitive AI functionality could replace traditional smartphones.

The iPhone is still Apple's key revenue driver, and Apple so far hasn't been able to find its next big product that could replace the iPhone as main money maker. Apple canceled its car project, and its first VR headset hasn't sold well. Apple is now focusing on robotics, and is continuing to work on wearables that could eventually lead to augmented reality smart glasses that would be a viable iPhone alternative.

Cue was, of course, just speculating, and Apple still has multiple iPhone innovations that are set to come out over the next several years. Apple could debut its first foldable iPhone as soon as next year, and in 2027, Apple is looking to introduce an all-display iPhone that has no cutouts for the camera or Face ID. So far, AI-based wearables have not successfully replaced smartphones. The Humane AI Pin was a failure, and the Rabbit R1 was also lambasted for poor performance when it launched last year. Other companies are also working on AI screen-free wearables, but none have caught on as of yet.

Cue was testifying due to Apple's search engine deal with Google, which is likely to be prohibited as part of the antitrust remedies that Google is facing to address its dominance in the search market.

Cue said that AI search solutions are poised to replace traditional search engines, and Apple is considering adding AI search tools from companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity to Safari in the future as options for people to select. Apple stands to lose at least $20 billion per year if Google isn't able to pay to be the default Safari search engine.

I think (hope), AI will eventually replace itself 😎

Short of a chip implant, you're still going to need some form of hardware to interface with AI
Or the AI would just be everywhere you go, in your house, in your car, on the street, at the train station, on the train, on the bus, etc. So that way it just knows *you*…..Why carry a device or implant one if the ‘public’ use ones are just everywhere you need to be.

Not sure I like it.

AI maybe. But certainly not AI. This morning. This morning Siri on my kitchen HomePod couldn’t even stop the alarm which was setting off on my iPhone, which was laying next room in the bedroom. “You don’t have any Alarms!”. Thank you, Cue. You suck.

Smart glasses?
Might not be at high adoption but think of iPhone 1… and might not be for everyone, just use some imagination
Smart glasses will never replace the smartphone because they have a very limited appeal.

Imagine trying to read your emails on a pair of smart glasses. You would go cross eyed.

Who is going to read emails in 10 years???
In my 35+ year career in the high tech industry I have learned that the word “never” is a challenge, nothing more…

I agree with cue.

Just watch the movie ‘her’ to see how we will likely interact with an ai agent on a device via earbuds.

Then add some smart glasses to the mix.

It’s not far fetched to think that in 10 years we will have edge ai that ‘phones home’ to more a more powerful cloud based AI (I mean this happens now!)

Plus your device doing the heavy lifting for your glasses and earbuds.

You’ll still have some sort of device but it’ll be in your pocket mostly.

You’ll use voice (for those that can speak/hear) to interact with your assistant, with more detailed results able to be viewed on your device and/or smart glasses.

Will this device still be an iPhone? Maybe. But we won’t be looking at its screen that much.

It’s perfectly feasible to imagine Apple producing hardware like I outlined above.

It’s not at all certain that Apple can produce an ai agent that could make all of this work, given the state of Siri.

And it’ll be perfectly possible for google and meta and other entrants to come up with such a set up.
This isn’t happening mate.

In other words: Apple wants to make us pay maximum subscription fees.
How high might these be?
Well, depending on which life cycle Apple sets.

1,200$ (iPhone price) / 5, 3 or 2 years?
I don't know if I want to know.

Also if everyone is wearing wearable computers on their heads that potentially are recording 24/7, what does that mean for crime? At the moment people have a pretty easy path to committing crimes against others and just denying they ever did it, but if everyone is recording 24/7 and everyone has a personal general AI that can corroborate what happened, does that mean you can't blackmail anyone anymore?

By human interface you mean like… chip implants and similar stuff? But, who is gonna do that? Half of the planet decided not to vaccinate from 2019 flu, do you think same people will be eager to “install latest update” into their brains to be always connected to the Internet? I really, really doubt it. If it will happen I guess we will have something worse than zombies, imagine a person scrolling Instagram… in their head, with no device. Uncanny af to say the least
Have you seen movie “Her” from 2013? No Implants needed. Ans surely there will be some screens still around to view stuff. And we will still need great operating system. But the role of hardware will decline.

If my Aunt had balls, she could be my Uncle. What’s the point of an article speculating on something that’s beyond obvious? Did Eddie also testify that water is wet?

I fell to see how AI a software product can replace a hardware product. Assuming he is correct, the best thing for Apple to do with the iPhone is allow it to be docked and used as a computer. This multifunctional will give it better longevity as a product imagine carrying around a computer in your pocket.

Unlikely as the search engine function is only part of the iPhone usage.
People will still be taking photos, uploading media, watching media, accessinga nd working on documents to name just a few things that would maybe not be ideal via AI.

Maybe search engines will change, and maybe wearables will evolve and do more, but i think for the foreseeable future smartphones will still be a thing.

AI != AI. That is something people need to understand. A LLM is something different than a CNN and likewise many more AIs exist. Most of them require high amounts of training material (some special models only require small amounts).
However, AI models fundamentally rely on learning from data. This means their ability to generate new information or discover entirely novel entities, like finding a new element, is limited. AI can only extrapolate from the patterns and information it has been exposed to during training. True innovation, such as discovering a new chemical element, requires creativity and insight beyond pattern recognition, typically involving experimental validation and theoretical breakthroughs that AI cannot achieve independently.
